Everything in the Laney family is cute and shorter than necessary. A few examples of this would be: Thomas Laney is really Tom Laney, and that his wife, Catriona is really a knacked Irish Cate. And then there’s the Laney twin brothers, Daniel and Matthew who really are just Danny and Matty to the girls, and Mat and Daniel to the boys. Theodora’s the last one, the youngest and the cutest, a massacre of everything sweet – Dory Laney. They’ve left the best for her, and it’s surely always felt that way, the Laney family being perfectly ordinary.

Case in point: Dora was read stories when she was young, and she was also always welcome to crawl into her parents’ bed when she had nightmares.

The reason behind that: Tom Laney wanted to keep his daughter wonderful.

***

The most important thing to happen in the Laney family every day before the ages of eleven was breakfast. It was not dinner, althought dinner was welcome as well. But it was breakfast that was honest and beautiful for the Laneys: the split orange juice, the crisp newspaper news, the subtle giving scraps to their old hound Buck underneath the table, the sloppy kisses that Tom would give his wife that would cause a mock uproar. Things happened at breakfast: Tom announced promotions, Dora bled for the first time, Matt told the whole family about Dan’s first kiss, and therefore Dan told the family later on about how Dan was “hung like a horse”, Cate Laney’s famous pies baked themselves, that one breakfast that was eaten on the cupboards (for Tom Laney had forgotten to close the windows for the night and it had flooded absolutely).

Life as the Laneys knew it, and as Dora Laney knew it was a kitchen.

***

But let’s concentrate on Dora Laney. Like you already know, she was the youngest and she was the cutest. She was not an ordinary Irish girl, she did not inherit her mother’s fire locks, but her father’s blonde baby curls. I don’t know if you’ve ever heard but they say that the girls that look like their fathers are lucky in love. And I will tell you also that Dora loved thinking that way.

Just like she loved most other things, living, dead, and still. People were amazed at her capacity to love – and it was everything that she loved, surely, and wickedly, and passionately. The snails she found, the missing buttons from jackets that no one wanted, to the last slices of pie that she took upon, she did everything with love. Most had thought that she would grow out of it, because that love was a child’s approach to the world but she did not, indeed, grow out of anything. It was, if anything, that she grew in.

The reason behind that: Tom Laney wanted to keep his daughter wonderful.

And so, he did, with his blonde baby curls.

Remembering that I wrote once, with such vigor + pleasure + investment. When did I lose this? When did I became a spectator? I know, all it takes is doing instead of wishing but what has made me so terrified?
